At Health-Performance Chiropractic, we believe true health comes from balance across three essential areas—what we call the triad of health:
When one pillar is out of balance, it affects the others. A child struggling to focus at school may have a retained reflex (biomechanical), food sensitivities (biochemical) or anxiety (emotional)—or all three. An adult with chronic fatigue might be dealing with poor gut function, spinal misalignment and prolonged stress.
Using Applied Kinesiology, we test and address all three pillars so you're not just masking symptoms but actually helping your body perform at its best in health, learning, work and activity.
Our ServicesWhat is it? Applied Kinesiology (AK) is a holistic assessment method used alongside chiropractic care to gather information from the nervous system. Using gentle muscle and reflex responses during an appointment, it helps guide clinical decision-making by highlighting areas of physical, biochemical, or emotional stress. Chiropractors at Health-Performance Chiropractic have completed additional training in AK and may draw on it to inform a personalised care plan.

Dr Michael Hooker is the principal chiropractor at Health-Performance Chiropractic in Hamilton, bringing nearly two decades of clinical experience to his work with Waikato patients. His background spans exercise science and chiropractic, and he draws on both disciplines to take a whole-body approach to health and function. Dr Hooker is the only Applied Kinesiology® (AK®) Diplomate practising in New Zealand and has been teaching the AK certification course since 2016.
Dr Hooker's approach is grounded in the principle that when the body is given the right physical, emotional and biochemical environment, it is well placed to adapt to the demands placed upon it. His role is to identify and address functional interference that may be limiting that adaptive capacity.
Qualifications
Dr Julia Thomson is a Hamilton-based chiropractor who brings a strong academic foundation and a genuine commitment to the Waikato community. Originally from Auckland, she has practised in Christchurch and Wellington and now calls the mighty Waikato home. She graduated from the New Zealand College of Chiropractic with the Research Excellence Award and has since earned certification in Applied Kinesiology®.

Dr Christina Coleman has a particular focus on family care, gut health and the emotional contributors to physical wellbeing at Health-Performance Chiropractic. Having been under chiropractic and Applied Kinesiology® care herself since the age of 14, she brings both personal and clinical understanding to her work with Hamilton patients of all ages.
Dr Coleman also holds a Diplomate in Chiropractic Paediatrics and incorporates Retained Neonatal Reflexes assessments into her practice. She takes a whole-person approach, considering each person's individual presentation rather than symptoms alone.
Qualifications
Dr Elise Turner grew up in Hamilton as a patient of Health-Performance Chiropractic before going on to complete her chiropractic studies at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic in Auckland, graduating in early 2023. She has since returned to the practice with a clinical focus on nervous system regulation and the physical toll that ongoing stress may take on daily function. Dr Turner incorporates Applied Kinesiology® into her assessments and takes a gentle, whole-person approach to care for Hamilton and Waikato patients of all ages.
Dr Turner is interested in building an honest and collaborative relationship with each person she sees, taking the time to understand the structural, chemical and emotional factors at play before determining a course of care.
Qualifications
Whatever your age or goal, we build a care plan around where you are now and where you want to be. Our main services include chiropractic care, Applied Kinesiology, gut and hormonal health, sports injury and performance, senior care, paediatric care and pregnancy care. Care is always tailored and may include gentle spinal and cranial work, visceral techniques, practical lifestyle strategies and targeted supplements when appropriate.
New Patients

Many parents are told colic, reflux, vomiting or a baby who "just won't settle" is normal, but you know when something isn't right. We see many babies with gut-type issues and use gentle cranial work, upper neck care and visceral techniques, which aim to calm the autonomic nervous system and support better digestion and comfort. For older children, we often assess retained reflexes using a program developed from Applied Kinesiology called Retained Neonatal Reflexes; this looks at primitive reflexes that may affect learning, behaviour, movement and emotional control.
By helping the brainstem and "new brain" work together more effectively, many children find it easier to sit still, listen, read and cope with everyday stresses.

Care plans are tailored to your individual needs and health history. Because many conditions develop gradually, the recommended frequency and length of care will vary depending on your specific situation and how long the condition has been present. Some patients choose to continue with regular chiropractic visits after their initial concerns have been addressed, as part of an ongoing approach to their general health and function. Any ongoing visits are discussed with you and based on your goals, preferences and clinical presentation.

Digestive concerns can involve many factors. Our chiropractors take a whole-person view and may discuss lifestyle, nervous system function and musculoskeletal factors that could be relevant to your presentation. We will refer you to another health professional where appropriate.
Yes. Our chiropractors see patients during pregnancy and provide gentle care options tailored to each stage. We also see babies and young children, using age-appropriate assessment and care.
