Applied Experience with a New Approach

Dr Robert Higginbotham is a dedicated professional who is committed to what some might view as a different approach to health care. That is, looking at enhancing and maintaining health versus simply dealing with sickness. Dr Rob comes from a military background–formerly a U.S. Army Ranger, he later trained as a medic and eventually a critical care nurse. His experiences in the nursing profession were very rewarding because he enjoys looking after people in need. But, perhaps more importantly, this is where he says he learned about becoming a “patient advocate.”

Wellness as a Lifestyle

Dr Rob’s personal interests include both classical Martial Arts and Yoga. He is an accomplished instructor, passionate about the history, philosophy and applications of Japanese martial culture, which he has studied and taught for over forty years. He currently runs a number of classes and is active in martial arts training for the development of youth in the community.

He’s always been keenly aware of how important it is for people to keep their bodies in good shape in order to have a fulfilling life and be of service in their community.

This knowledge was instrumental in his decision to go into the healthcare field.

After discovering the ‘wellness concept’ as a better model for healthcare and wishing to have the freedom to work for himself, Dr Rob decided to become a chiropractor. He was attracted to chiropractic because he likes the ideas it promotes:

  • we are all responsible for our own health
  • our bodies have the capacity to self-heal given that they are operating in good order
  • As Dr Rob puts it; “It is much better to park the ambulance at the top of the cliff than at the bottom”

Embracing Chiropractic on the Path Toward Wellness

After leaving the military to start his new career, Dr Rob became a new dad. Both he and his wife decided they would like to raise their children in New Zealand, so he began his Chiropractic education at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic while concurrently attending undergraduate courses at Auckland University.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree, in Psychology, and Doctor of Chiropractic degree, he further advanced his education by completing a post-graduate course in Applied Kinesiology.

Dr. Rob practiced in Auckland and on Waiheke Island for a number of years, then opened Action Potential Chiropractic in Tauranga in 2007.  He is a member of the International Chiropractor’s Association, the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association, International College of Applied Kinesiologists and the International Association of Yoga Therapists.

As Dr Rob joins Health Performance we welcome his experience and the approach he offers our clients here in Hamilton. He will be working with us Tuesdays and Thursdays. He will be available at our Rototuna clinic for both morning and afternoon appointments on these days.
